Installing MikTeX on a machine without net connection

Post by mas »

Hello,

I have a machine running linux which has an internet connection. I have another machine at a different location running Windows XP without net connection. Searching through the MikTeX site and this forum did not give me any indication of how I can download and install MikTeX on to the Windows machine via my linux machine. Is it even doable? If so, can someone point me to the relevant docs?

Regards,

sridhar

Installing MikTeX on a machine without net connection

I guess you are using TeX Live on your Linux machine. What do you think about using TeX Live instead of MiKTeX on Windows as well? You could download TeX Live 2008 as an ISO image here and install it from DVD.

Installing TeXLive is not a problem at all. A colleague wants it and hence the query.

So, can I presume that there is no way to get MikTeX on to a machine without net connection?

I don't see why you couldn't download the "Basic MiKTeX 2.7" executable from here and transfer it over and install it. It just wouldn't be a full installation, so you'd have to manually install additional pacakges.

Right on the page you have mentioned, it states that a net connection is required.
To install a basic MiKTeX system, download and run the "Basic MiKTeX" installer. MiKTeX has the ability to install missing packages automatically, i.e., this installer is suitable for computers connected to the Internet.
Moreover, I do not find a link/page from where I can download individual packages to install.

You can just download the lot from:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/win32/miktex/

and then use the basic installer, pointing it at the local directory containing all of the packages.

Thanks. That is the information I was looking for.

Have started downloading the packages and will post back the results.
