OK, thanks. I was confused by the fact that in order to start MiKTeX "options", you have to actually select "Settings" from the start menu.
Also, I would like to point out that TeXWorks, which was suggested as a substitute for the "crappy" TeXNiCCenter, crashed twice in 30 minutes, losing ...

sommerfee, thank you very much. The webpage says 'Remedy: start MiKTeX Options and choose either Yes or No (but not "Ask me first") for the option "Install missing packages on-the-fly".' I remember seeing this dialog at some point and choosing "ask me first" but I have no idea how to get back there ...

I am having a problem with updating MiKTeX to 2.9 (from 2.7) for use with TeXNicCenter. I used the TeXNicCenter wizard to define output profiles for DVI, PDF, and PS. Now when I try to get compile and view any kind of output, the output log says "I couldn't open file name 'filename.aux' Couldn't ...
