Re: Packages not working
This is a known issue of TeXnicCenter, see http://www.miktex.org/2.9/issues
So either use the workaround mentioned on the web page above, or forget that crappy TeXnicCenter and use a proper LaTeX editor instead. For example you could give TeXworks a try which is already installed on your PC (because it's part of MikTeX).

Re: Packages not working
sommerfee, thank you very much. The webpage says 'Remedy: start MiKTeX Options and choose either Yes or No (but not "Ask me first") for the option "Install missing packages on-the-fly".' I remember seeing this dialog at some point and choosing "ask me first" but I have no idea how to get back there. How do I start MiKTeX options? Meanwhile I'll give that TeXWorks a try.

Re: Packages not working
OK, thanks. I was confused by the fact that in order to start MiKTeX "options", you have to actually select "Settings" from the start menu.
Also, I would like to point out that TeXWorks, which was suggested as a substitute for the "crappy" TeXNiCCenter, crashed twice in 30 minutes, losing everything I had not saved. The only way to use it seems to be to save after every sentence.
