I am changing between two and one column frequently in a paper with large equations and images, but it is really difficult to follow the flow of text when columns are broken up. I am looking for a way to add guiding lines to the bottoms and tops of the columns to help guide the reader. I have attached an example of what I want to do.
Anyone have any idea how to do this automatically?

Guiding Lines in multi-columned Document
This document was done with revtex4-1 class, which provides this environment. I remember that a similar question has already been answered here. A Forum Search should help you on. It should also be possible to extract the relevant code from the class file and insert it into your document (for the case you don't need to use the class).
