Indexer needs help - can I import an RTF index into LaTex

Post by indexer_ken »

Hi LaTex People,

I'm brand new to LaTex. I'm a professional back-of-book indexer who works using indexing software and usually turn in my indexes, to publishers, in RTF format. I work for academic/scholarly presses (among others).

A client asked me if I could write an index for a book written in LaTex. Someone suggested to me that I might be able to write the index, as usual, in my indexing software, save that file as an RTF file (as usual) and then import that file into LaTex.

Is this true? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

It seems to be very complicated. I would understand your query if it were, say, a Word document. Anyway, I don't know if it's possible, but I'm sure it would be as simple to go the normal way: insert the indexing commands directly in the latex file, run latex (or pdflatex), which creates an auxiliary file dedicated to indexes (among many others), then run MakeIndex, thus creating the index file, and finally rerun latex and you're done!
