Novel layout

Post by hds »

Hi there,

I would like to format a text as a novel. That means I'd like the following:
- 30 lines per page
- max. 60 characters per line
- page numbering at the bottom
- chapter and book title at the top
- new page at the end of a chapter

can anybody of you maybe send me a link to some standard template? I know, I'm lazy, but I would rather continue writing my novel than spend hours and hours figuring out how to format it right :)

cheers,

Julian

On which paper format? In which font size?

From my point of view there's no special template needed. These are basic features. You may take a look at KOMA Script or the memoir class. They offer all options you need. And perhaps some basic reading might be suggestive.

Are you planning on self-publishing or are you intending to submit your text to a publisher or literary agent? If you want to submit it, you should typeset it like a manuscript not like a novel. The sffms class can do that.

Use Memoir class in LYX
Memoir class can do all the things you want but you will have to read the manual.
Another recommended reading is the book "TEX for the Impatient" which can be downloaded from the latex community site just do a search for it by name.
With Memoir class the time spent reading these will be well spent as you will be able to make your NOVEL LOOK VERY PROFFESIONAL.
with LYX you make your novel look the way you want it to and then You change the linespacing to Double or one and a half for sending it out to publishers as manuscript for aproval.
LYX also makes it easy to export a PDF copy for emailing and an HTML copy for on the net display.
Lyx enables easy insertion of Pictures
Lyx allows you to insert TEX and Latex code in what they call ERT (eveil red text) boxes so you can use all of TEX and Latex capabilities to do a really nice job with minimal hassel.
