Greetings from Malaysia

Hello,

I posted several questions here, but never actually looked to this room. Allow me to post something

I just get to know LaTeX last year, when I was about to send a paper to a journal.. and started to wonder how I can sorting my citation number (I'm using IEEE type/plain) citation back then.

Now I just started my phd around 4 months... so around this less than a year I've been using Latex for:

Beamer (presentation for conferences/talks):
Talk 1: http://www.scribd.com/doc/22407915/Tech ... e-Software

Talk 2: http://www.scribd.com/doc/22408006/Soft ... NU-gettext

Also, my friend and I maintain this blog:

http://latex-my.blogspot.com/

Somehow I also wrote a free book with downloadable TeX sources here, in Malay language, also written in LaTeX.. with indexes, ToC and memoir class:

http://code.google.com/p/latex-my-docs/

Most of the time I wrote my .tex files with Kile, sometimes using vim. Used to play around with Whizzytex, auctex and vim-latex.. but I guess it's pretty overkill for me.

And up to now.. I still wonder why using LaTeX is better than working on MS Words or OOOffice. The only reason perhaps because I comfortable with LaTeX because I know how to use it a little bit.

Recommended reading 2024:

NEW: TikZ book now 40% off at Amazon.com for a short time.

Thanks for sharing some of your recent work with us. You seem to be quite familiar with this typesetting system.

Perhaps a comparison will help you [1]. I could tell you some more reasons but this would go beyond the scope of the discussion. And they would be very subjective.

Put typographical excellence of LaTeX aside, since making a comparison between word processors and LaTeX on this field is plain ridiculous, for me personally even these two most basic things are enough to make a grave difference:

1. \usepackage
2. \newcommand

Of course, there are couple of thousand other reasons, but these are enough not to even consider going further.

Localghost - thanks for the link. Never met that article before. Nice one.
meho_r - yeah, perhaps the include and renew command are among the reasons.
