General ⇒ Index list on side pane

Hi all,

I want to generate ps or pdf files which have an index list on the side pane of the viewer. This jpg file illustrates what I mean.

I googled but couldn't find any useful information, maybe I am not searching with the right keywords.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

What you mean is not an index but the Table of Contents (ToC) displayed in the side panel of the PDF reader. Therefore your question has nothing to do with MakeIndex. This ToC is produced by the hyperref package. Read its manual to learn how to use it.
