Document Classes ⇒ removing the chapter title

Hi.

I'm using the \bodymatter in my book class document. I'm happy with it only I get in each chapter also the chapter title:

chapter 1
Introduction

And I don't want the chapter. I could live only with :

1
Introduction

or

1. Introduction

or even:

Introduction

If I switch to /backmatter I don't get the title or number at all which is fine but All the section and subsection are numbered the following way:
0.1
0.2
0.3
etc.
which is bad

Any help?
