Missing control sequence inserted - package not loaded?

Post by Matty »

Hi there,

I hope someone could help me!! I'm new here so please forgive my newbness. Please let me know if i'v broken any rules - I'm in a huge hurry to get this finished so i only had a quick glance over the rules...
I'm getting an error when I'm compiling that I can't seem to fix. I've tried to make small version that replicates the error I'm getting but when i do the error doesn't appear any more - it only appears when i compile the full document. I have a feeling it might be something to do with a package that I'm calling.. any way i'll post what i get here..
package - astron
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/biblio/ ... ib/astron/

here's the packages i'm calling;

Code: Select all

\documentclass[manuscript]{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{subfigure}
\usepackage{threeparttable}
\usepackage{astron}
\usepackage{array}
\usepackage[perpage]{footmisc}
And here is the message i get (well this is the top half of the error - i think the problem lies in "Missing control sequence inserted";

Code: Select all

Missing control sequence inserted - package not loaded?

Post by Matty »

Hi Thorsten,

thanks for the quick reply and for editing my post - i see now how to input code on the board!

I need this package (astron) because my report must follow certain referencing standards and it also includes the \cite*{Author} command which is really useful.

You say that the package is obsolete but i am able to compile a different document with it..

Have you ever seen this before?

Code: Select all

Missing control sequence inserted. ...atti\let \reserved@d = *\def {\@@par }}}{5}
Many thanks,
Matty

Missing control sequence inserted - package not loaded?

Post by localghost »

I deleted my first reply in the meantime because I wanted to do some testing. If you could provide a minimal working example (MWE) we could find a solution much faster.

And if you could describe the demands for your bibliography style there may be already an appropriate style that you could use [1]. A package considered as obsolete doesn't mean that it wouldn't work at all but it can cause problems in conjunction with other packages.

Best regards and welcome to the board

OK I've shortened it down as much as i can and still get the same error - looks like it has something to do with the figure i tried to embed. Here is MWE

Code: Select all

\documentclass[manuscript]{article}

\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{subfigure}
\usepackage{threeparttable}

Missing control sequence inserted - package not loaded?

Post by localghost »

At first make sure that you use the current version of all included packages. Further you should use the short form for the \caption command in your figure environment because your citation shall not appear in the LoF.

Finally (but not problem related) you should set page and paper dimensions by means of the geometry package.

Re: Missing control sequence inserted - package not loaded?

Thanks Thorsten,

I just got the astron package from the ctan site yesterday - I followed the instructions on how to put the right files etc in the right place but is there anyway to check and see if it has been done correctly?

The only real problem I'm having now is with the \cite*{} command - \cite{} works fine but \cite*{} just displays the year in brackets
ie - (year)
where it should be
-- Author (year)

This is one of the main functions of the astron package which is why I'm wondering if it is being loaded properly..

Any thoughts on this would be great, and thanks for all you've done so far!
Matty.
