Strange that I haven't been able to find any help on this on the web. I have quite a few complicated formulas with small details like hats, tildes, and overlines on the variables. So for example,

\frac{1}{\frac{\left(a\overline{b}}{c}\right)}

I want that fraction in the denominator to be larger. Is there an easy way?

you can use the command dfrac. For more details look to the mathmode.

At first you should be aware of the fact that your code is not working this way. The pair of delimiters is placed wrong (at least the left part). But the following will do.

  \frac{1}{\left(\dfrac{a\overline{b}}{c}\right)}
\]

Note the display mode fraction (dfrac) inside the outer fraction.
