Fonts & Character Sets ⇒ unknown addition to article template

a colleague left today and as she walked out the door she handed me a thumb drive saying, "I think you'll find some of this useful."

It's a bunch of Latex stuff including a template that includes the following:

\textbf{article title goes here\\ \vspace{1 em} by author name}
\end{center}
\the\font

which looks ordinary enough, except I have no idea what: \the\font does.

I tried removing it to see if it made any difference and there was nothing I could see.

does anyone have any idea what it does?
