Using LyX to add comments to concepts in Beamer

Post by Gnosos »

I've used LyX for a while, and now I'm working on my first Beamer presentation. I want to display concepts and then add a comment to the picture. I can think of two approaches for what I want to do, and I'm hoping for help with at least one, preferably both, of them: i.e., how to implement each approach using LyX? (I'm deliberately asking this for LyX, rather than LaTeX to minimize use of ERT and to learn the most effective LyX techniques.) In both cases, I'll try to describe the desired result. I have no idea how to accomplish either one.

Approach 1: Itemize
Starts with a Frame with Pauses between itemized list elements. Then what?

Slide 1:
  1. Appetizer
Slide 2:
  1. Appetizer
  2. Entree
Slide 3:
  1. Appetizer
  2. Entree
  3. Dessert
Slide 4:
Now here's where I am lost. I want to fade in a large, right curly bracket "}" to the right of Appetizer and Entree, covering both rows, and to its right put the text, "Many people skip the dessert."
  1. Appetizer } Many people
  2. Entree } skip the dessert.
  3. Dessert
Approach 2: Concept Map or Other Diagram
This approach uses a concept map. At the center would be a circle around the word, "Dinner." Three circles would be arranged around this center circle, each one of the three would be at the corner of an equilateral triangle. They would be connected by arrows, and contain the words "Appetizer," "Entree," and "Dessert," respectively. They would be joined by arrows, proceeding from Appetizer to Entree to Dessert. Again, Pause commands would construct the diagram piecemeal.

The last slide, would fade in the comment, "Many people skip the dessert." This could be done a number of ways:
  • Again, a curly bracket (perhaps horizontal this time or parallel to one of the arrows) could join the circles for "Appetizer" and "Entree," and the text would be offset from the bracket's point.
  • The circle for "Dessert" would fade, and the comment would appear in some appropriate space.
  • Some other modification of the diagram could convey the idea.
I know how to do such things with PowerPoint. But I want to use LyX/Beamer!
