Advice for beginner

I am beginners to study Latex format. Because now I am 3rd year in my Phd study in field food microbilogy. And I want to write my phd thesis in latex style/format, also scientific articles in food microbiology (in my field many times use graph/charts and figures, also tables). I need your advice:
1-Which e-book or e-information I must to read?
2-Which software (free are welcome) I need to install in my computer (xp windows)?
3-Which online site or e-resources good for me for traning?
4-Which software or e-resources good for Latex code write, also these resources itself determines my mistakes and can correct my mistakes?
5-How many times I need to be (though) intermediate level and independently written texts and publications?
