I want to use the bibliographystyle abbrv so that I can abbreviate the first names but my references don't appear in numerical order i.e in my references page they appear like this

Also

Is there a bibliography style that allows me to abberviate first names and at the same time still have my references in numerical order ? Also I tried using the style JRSS but it gave me the error message can't open style file JRSS.bst. Any idea what's wrong ?

I've tried the abbrv style and I get the references in numerical order. You should provide a minimal working example showing the problem. Attach at least the tex and the bib files.

The error mesage means that LaTeX can't find JRSS.bst because either it is not installed in your TeX distribution or it is located in a directory to which LaTeX has no access.
