Hi,
I just want to start out by saying I am not an expert LyX user or Latex programmer. I use LyX for basic things such as writing mathematical reports and making handouts and tests for the math classes I teach.
I just downloaded Mountain Lion for my Mac and now all of the normal document classes are unavailable for LyX. What I've gathered from reading other literature is that I need to download certain prerequisites (amsart.cls and article.cls for example), and I do this by adding files to my user directory..? When I try to locate my user directory using
Help --> About LyX, it says "User directory: ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.1/"
But when I go into finder to try to locate the directory there is no folder "LyX-2.1" in application support.
I'm not even sure if I'm on the right track. I've been trying to figure this our for days and have gotten basically nowhere. Even if I can get into my user directory, can anyone give me some direction on how I install these prerequisites?
I'm sorry for my rookie question, I'm still learning! Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

All of my Document Classes are unavailable with Mountain Lio
LyX is just an assistant doing stuff for you. The real work is done by TeX, i guess this is missing.
Please install MacTeX. That gives you all the programs, classes and packages you need.

The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.

Thank you for the response! I already did have MacTex but I ended up figuring it out. Thanks again!

Can you share your solution? Maybe another user with the same symptoms comes here. I guess he would be pleased to find a starting point.
