Hi,
I have just joined this site and have been using Latex since DOS was around. I am a retired university lecturer, who now uses Latex, actually Miktex, only occasionally. I have used WinEdit for many years, and am still on ver 5, which is quite ancient. However, I am always frustrated by the lack of line-numbering. Maybe the current version has this, but I don't feel inclined to spend around $60 for it.
I have recently switched to TexMaker, which provides line-numbering and seems quite nice, and am using ver 4.03. However, I have also just upgraded to 64-bit Windows 7 from XP and TexMaker has stopped working. My question is: is there a free 64-bit version of Texmaker? Is this the thing that I can download with Codex? I am reluctant to put something on my machine that clogs it up with adverts etc.
If anyone has a better suggestion than TexMaker, that also fills the bill, I should be pleased to hear. :)

There is a whole bunch of TeX-editors. Please have a look at the comparison list.

Personally, i use vim, but there is a steep learning curve involved. The same goes for emacs, but it's absolutely worth it (at least for vim, but i heard the same about emacs).

A nice point-and-click-adventure is TeXstudio, a fork of texmaker.

Remember, any simple text editor can do the job.
