Suppress vertical space for sections with no title

Post by Garry Lockyer »

Good Day!

With apologies if this has been dealt with previously and I will keep searching and trying things but am under time constraints to get a document out so ...

I need to replicate a Word document format that has numbered (in the left margin) sections (subsection, subsubsection, etc.) without titles. LaTex leaves blank vertical space for a blank (empty) title and I need to suppress that vertical space such that the section material is typeset on the same line as the section number.

For example, LaTex does the following for a subsection with no title:

X.Y (Vertical Space For Title)

Section material.

while I need it to:

X.Y Section material.

I suspect the answer is to customize the various section commands but I simply do not have the knowledge (yet!) to do that soon.

Many thanks in advance.

Garry

The \paragraph command is defined that way, if I recall correctly; try issuing \show\paragraph and then redefining \section and \subsection to have similar styles. Obviously you'll have to replace things specific to \paragraph with their \section/etc. equivalents.
