First-time Lyx user feedback

Post by kallator »

Hi everyone,

I've known about Lyx for a while, and when presented with the task of formatting a small book, I thought it would be a great chance to try it out.

I spent several hours importing text and formatting it. This part worked smoothly.

Then it came time to export to PDF. Well. It looked like shit. I tried several other ways and means to get the text out as a PDF, each looked worse than the last one. I started hunting around on the internet for solutions, and it seems there's a font issue with exporting to PDF (something about only bitmap fonts being exported). I tried some of the suggested adjustments to make the PDF look better, but no luck.

My feedback is that if one of your primary benefits is supposedly a higher quality output, I feel like it would be prudent to ensure I can get that higher quality output by default.

I've copied and pasted back into Word, with all it's faults, and after 60 seconds of messing around with format settings, I now have a document that is vastly superior to the one outputted by Lyx.

Thanks for your time.
