How to install PLyXSystem

Post by efroselli »

I'm still a Lyx newbie so please forgive if this question is very green.

Searching the internet, I have come across a set of tools for Lyx that sound like they could be very useful to me, at:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/PLyXSystem

On a linked page, the author, Andrew Parsloe, says:
"With this posting there are 9 files:

pLyX.py, pLyX_help.py -- the 'master' script & its help file
qLyX.py -- an 'undo' script which uses the backup file to do the undoing
pLyX.module -- a LyX module defining various custom insets
pLyX(compressed).lyx -- an explanatory LyX document...."

What follows is what looks like source code for each of the files. Some are in Python, and some in compressed Lyx. I have already downloaded the latter. They are demos, but they do not work unless one has the companion Python modules.

So how do you use these modules? Do you have to compile them? Do you copy-paste the source to some local directory?

Perhaps Andrew never dreamed that one might need such basic guidance, but in any case I can't figure out how to get from interesting Web search result to operational in Lyx.

Thanks all,

EFR

Replying to myself again, I found some instructions in one of the compressed Lyx files on the site, which I am now following.
I'll come back if I have further problems. Thanks for patience.

How to install PLyXSystem

Post by efroselli »

I'm having some issues following the instructions.

They say:
2. File formats

(a) Under Tools -> Preferences -> File Handling -> File Formats, click the New button and enter pLyX in the Format box, set the Document format check box, enter plyx in the Short Name box, enter lyx in the Extension box, under Viewer choose Custom and enter LyX in the box on the right. Click the Apply button.
And there are similar instructions for a qlyx format. But in either case, when I try to enter the Short Name, I get an error message:
You cannot change a format's short name if the format is used by a converter. Please remove the converter first.
I don't want to go removing anything (even if I could figure out how) for fear of seriously busticating a program needed for production.

Also, as soon as I try to save the file format qlyx, plyx disappears from the list and vice-versa. Hence I cannot go any farther.

Thnaks to anyone who can help.

plyx is not part of built-in LyX. It is new and hasn't been widely tested. I've been meaning to look at it but won't be able to for a while. It looks very nice and useful.

Did you figure out the problem? This forum is probably not the right place. I would recommend contacting the author directly (Andrew Parsloe)
