Numbers and References for Equations without Label

Post by ramivei »

Hello everybody,

I started using LyX and it seems great. While entering equations I found I can enter numbered equation which is good. When I tried to reference those equations in my text I found out I need to label them.

My question is can I automatically number my equations and reference them in the text without labeling them each time?

Thanks.

How would LyX know which equation you wanted to reference if you do not give it a label?

I agree with the above post 100%, though I might add something: you can indeed number the equations without giving them labels. You simply can't cross-reference those numbers without a label.

Are you guys kidding? You're rhetorically asking how would latex know? How does it know how to number them to begin with? This is not magic peeps. Latex knows which equation is which. It is a totally valid question to ask if we can reference an equation with labeling the actual equation, since clearly Latex already knows the equation numbering. For example, I could take a look at my compiled document, note that I want to reference equation number 4 (which is automatically numbered), and then simply reference it. There is no inherent reason why I should have to add a label to the original equation.

Welcome Mr Cooper,
it is indeed completely unclear for LaTeX which equation is where.

On the other hand, how do you as the user make a computer program clear, which equation you want to cross reference?

So no, they where not asking rhetorically.
The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.
