MiKTeX and proTeXt ⇒ Manually added Package not listed in Package Manager

I just started using MiKTeX and LyX. In MikTeX I have the following problem.

I have to install a *.sty file manually. So I followed the manual and created a directory:
C:\Local TeX Files\tex\latex\misc
Then copied the *.sty file here in the misc-folder. Then I opened Start>MikTeX 2.9 >Maintenance>Settings
and added the path C:\Local TeX Files into the Roots tab. It is there, even after closing Settings. The problem is that the *.sty file does not show up in the MiKTeX Package Manager. So I can't install it. What went wrong?

I'm using Vista.

The package will never be listed in the MiKTeX Package Manager (MPM) since it is not a native part of the distribution and therefore is not registered in the package database. You installed it manually, you will have to deinstall it manually.
