Metric (TFM) file not found. (stmary)

Post by zeroparallax »

I'm getting the following error when I try to compile my LaTeX file (LifeStyle.tex):

Code: Select all

./LifeStyle.tex:16:Font U/stmary/m/n/10.95=stmary11 at 10.95pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. \item T

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
This error has something to do with the mathbbol package:
The file has

Code: Select all

\usepackage[cspex,bbgreekl]{mathbbol}
הההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההה
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
in it (actually, this code is really in a file that is \include(d) in LifeStyle.tex), and the error goes away if I comment this out. However, I don't want to comment this line out in the included file.

I didn't get this error when I was working in Gentoo Linux, but now that I'm using Kubuntu Linux I've had some errors such as this crop up. (Another error was very similar but had to do with a metric file other than stmary, and I was able to fix it using online guidance that told me to simply change a file whose name had a lowercase letter to the same name with an upper case letter!)

When compiling other LaTeX files I sometimes get errors that refer to stmary12 or stmary14, but as far as I can tell, the stmary files only go up to stmary10.

After seeing this page,
http://www.nabble.com/Bug-447888:-Wrong ... 33982.html
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling texlive-math-extra, but that didn't help.

Can anyone help me out?

I have "texlive-latex-recommended" installed. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but no luck.

I now think the problem is a conflict between

Code: Select all

\usepackage[cspex,bbgreekl]{mathbbol}

and my definition for "squished lists":

Code, edit and compile here:

then there are no errors, and if I leave it there and get rid of the squished lists, there are no errors.

I would prefer not to have to comment this line out.

Metric (TFM) file not found. (stmary)

Post by zeroparallax »

I've finally fixed (almost all of) my problems! The solution was to download (via Adept, since I'm using Kubuntu) texlive-math-extra, which has stmaryrd -- St Mary Road symbols for functional programming, and texlive-fonts-extra, which has bbold -- Sans serif blackboard bold, and then make sure that the document font size is either 10pt or 12pt (not 11pt) when actually using bbold (because, for some reason, there is a bbold10.mf and a bbold12.mf but no bbold11.mf).

Here's a remaining issue, though: the following simple file crashes

Code: Select all

Code, edit and compile here:
\documentclass[10pt,letterpaper]{article}
\usepackage{mathbbol}
\begin{document}
\section{Trying out math mode $a$}
\end{document}
הההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההההה
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
with the error being

Code: Select all

[LaTeX] finished with exit status 1
./Crash2.tex:5:Font U/bbold/m/n/14.4=bbold14 at 14.4pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. \section{Trying out math mode $a$}

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
It seems to be complaining about the font size even though I'm not using a blackboard bold character. FYI, these seem to be the only sizes:
bbold5, bbold6, bbold7, bbold8, bbold9, bbold10, bbold12, and bbold17 (no point size 14, as this section heading seems to be).

If you can tell us what you want to achieve with the mathbbol package, we may be able to point out alternatives. Bold blackboard characters could also be typeset with amsmath.

I just wanted as many blackboard bold characters as possible. The package bbold doesn't have this latest-mentioned error, but it doesn't seem to provide lower-case Greek letters like mathbbol does (... although bbold does provide blackboard bold punctuation and other symbols).

By the way, this is not a critical issue for me, since I no longer include the blackboard bold packages in my "style file" (see http://aforrester.bol.ucla.edu/educate.php#LaTeX) that I include in my LaTeX files. (I like 11pt font size.) But now I know that when I do use mathbbol, I can't use 11pt font size or put math-style text in section headings.

(It's funny though, because I thought I was able to use 11pt font size with these packages when I was using Gentoo Linux.)

I just found out that mathbbol also does not allow the \LaTeX command in section headings!

Try this and see what I mean:

Code: Select all

Code, edit and compile here:
\documentclass[10pt,letterpaper]{article}
\usepackage{mathbbol}
\begin{document}
\section{Trying out \LaTeX}
\end{document}

This is nearly impossible. Your example works perfectly, and there is nothing inside the mathbbol code that could evoke such a behaviour. Actually, the package doesn't change a single command.
