"article.cls not found" error

Post by mark_c93 »

I recently got a new computer (mac, using texshop), and after transferring all of my files, none of them would open, always displaying this error:

! LaTeX Error: File 'article.cls' not found.

The same error appears for all types of document class. After a bit of initial searching, it seemed as though other people had run into the same problem, but I was unable to understand the proposed solutions. Any idea on how to troubleshoot this?

Hi Mark,

welcome to the board!

Besides transfering your files, did you install TeX at all? MacTeX? article.cls belongs to the standard LaTeX installation.

I did not re-install TeX or MacTeX on the new computer, I just assumed that it would transfer like the other software on the old computer did. Where can I install TeX or MacTeX, and which would you recommend?

Thanks!

I recommend to use MacTeX. The new 2012 release will appear in some days, a testing release which may be the final one now can be found on these hosts. There's a 2 Gig MacTeX image on each server.
