Package Installation in MiKTeX 2.9 from a zipped Folder
can anyone help please? My installation is MiKTeX 2.9 and I have been trying to install packages from zipped folders as follows: open the location "Program Files/MiKTeX 2.9/tex/latex/" and create a new folder e.g. pgf, extract the zipped folder into this folder, and finally refresh the FNDB. But it can't seem to work. MiKTeX claims that certain files are not available in some locations (which it specifies);only to find the "supposedly" unavailable files when I open the location.
So in short, how do I install big packages like pgf 2.10 and beamer if I have downloaded them as zipped folders?

welcome to the board!
I strongly suggest to use the MiKTeX package manager. Both pgf 2.10 and beamer are available as MiKTeX packages. The manager does all for you.

Thank you for your suggestion. So the pgfplots package that appears on MikTeX's Package Manager actually includes all files in pgf 2.10? I haven't actually tried using your suggestion because the computer I'm using has no internet connection. But it sounds like the perfect solution.Thanks.

the MiKTeX package information page shows it's version 2.10 packaged on 2011-11-05. It should be complete. There are additional packages though which use pgf and may be independently packaged, as they don't direcly belong to pgf.
