"error loading file into memory"

Post by BenBBB »

Dear Folks,

I need your help, as my current project is going to fail if I can't
solve this problem with Lyx.

I am getting the message "error loading file into memory" or
occasionally "error converting file to loadable format".

I am including .svg files (edited with inkscape) directly into
a lyx document. And while most files load correctly two don't,
with the error messages (one or the other) stated above.

The files are quite massive with some ~10 Mb.
At one occasion they loaded correctly, but other svg files previously
causing no problem no did in a kind of sclusive fashion.

Things I did, that not solved my problem:
  • I have properly set inkscape as the converter for .svg files in the Lyx preferences
  • I tried to change names of the .svg files, and/or alter them in inkscape and save again.
  • I tried to split up the original Lyx file into two.
Could anyone tell me what I could do?
I grew a bit depserate.

Thanks you very much in advance!

Ben

Hi Ben,

perhaps convert your SVG files manually to PDF, via Inkscape, and include the PDF files instead.

Hi Stefan,

thanks for your reply.

I tried to do it but the quality result of converting
svg. directly into pdf is not good. E.g. all blur effects get lost.

I cleaned up the .svg files achieving a significant reduction in file size.
Most are now ~500 kb and the two biggest files are < 2Mb, instead of 18 Mb.

Yet, the same failuure continues.
Some pictures load other do not in a manner that appears random.
therefore I thaught it must have something to do with a memory overlaod
or such a like. This was the rationality behind me reducing the file size.

Anybody else any suggestions?

If your final output would be SVG, ok. But if your output is PDF though, SVG would get converted to PDF in any way. So it seems the first PDF conversion is not good enough, and you could try a different way of conversion, either via Inkscape or any other graphics program. Loosing blur effect could be caused by a missing or bad option or a lacking feature of the converter or program.

Hi Stefan,

thanks for your help.

I tried different programs with all permutations of respective settings
to convert the svg into pdf as you suggested.
No result was satisfying.

It was a rough day.

Finally I decided to take snapshots from the svg files edit them with GIMP and
include them as jpg into my LyX document.
The elegency of this approach is comparable to putting your display on your scanner
to copy a document on its screen. :D

However the optical result is surprisingly good
and the file size is remarkably low at the same time.
So this will do the job for me.

Thanks again.

Ben
