General ⇒ Installing texlive without root access or access to /usr/

I posted this in the texlive forum but got no responses so I'm going to try here (sorry!).


I've downloaded and burnt texlive but I don't have root access on my server. Is it still possible to get it to work? Can I put tex somewhere else and set PATH? Without root access can I do *anything* about TeX?

At the moment I'm using mimeTeX but it's not a particularly good replacement.
