hi,
i am using lyx 2.02, and MiKTeX 2.9. i am using "--" and "---" within my document. when i render it using CTRL+R, the hyphens\dashes does not appear in my PDF. how can i fix it?

welcome to the board!
It could be a font issue, such as if the used font doesn't provide those ligatures. Perhaps post the LyX file as attachment here, and the PDF output.
