I of course did a google search and found lots of examples. It took ~20 minutes of looking through 10 different forums. Most of the versions I found were for earlier versions of lyx, like 1.6. I finally ended up using one that I had to just assume was for lyx 2.0. I don't know whether it's the 'best' or not, or whether it's older or newer than the broken link that rmanoj posted.
It seems to me that the wiki is the perfect solution for this - the newest version should be kept there so everyone like me doesn't have to waste tons of time reinventing the wheel and thinking that lyx isn't ready for primetime because every little thing takes forever to figure out for a casual user.
If someone could point me to a good version, I will happily update the wiki.
