Graphics, Figures & Tables ⇒ pst-barcode / auto-pst-pdf failure

Im running MiKTeX 2.9 on Windows and trying to generate QRCodes. These worked fine (using the example uploaded) but they have now disappeared (worked under 2.7, not 2.9).

The error from the log file is:

The autopp.pdf file is created but the pic.pdf file is NOT created (i.e. the QRCode is generated but it isnt cropped for some reason). A tmp-pdfcrop.tex file is left behind.

ANy thoughts what might be the problem here? I initially tried ActivePerl but get the same result with Strawberry Perl (and its the cropping in Perl which seems to be failing). A friend has run the same code on a vanilla Mac OX 10.6.8 with texlive and it works fine.
