Doing Projects with LyX?

Post by yaya10 »

Hello everyone,

I have some queries about LaTeX and its editor LyX. I have a project next semester and I am asked to do it using LaTeX. My questions are:

Can I use LyX instead of LaTeX as I am not good in writing commands? I mean does it (LyX) do everything LaTeX can do? Like citation, referencing, tables and table of contents?

Please help because this project is the first one for me and I have no experience in doing such projects nor using LaTeX or LyX. I am not going to take the project if LaTeX and LyX will make it to complicated for me.

Regards,
Yaya

Doing Projects with LyX?

Post by Stefan Kottwitz »

Hi Yaya,

welcome to the board!

You can develop complete projects using LyX. There are styles and templates for it, for example have a look at http://www.thesis-template.com/.

How easy or difficult it is, depends on your requirements. If you follow common styles, it might be easy. However, if you would like to create your own style or to write in uncommon ways, it might become difficult.

With LyX one can made a quick start. From time to time one may need pieces of LaTeX though, and generally a good understanding of LaTeX is useful.

With LaTeX you can get very good support here, if you encounter problems. Often you just need to load a package or to use some code lines we can show. With LyX, it's harder to help, to say "click here, then there, ..." Often advanced LyX users continue with LaTeX.

Think about if you would use LaTeX again for further projects, or for a thesis. Then it's definitely worth learning.
