Utopia has no real small caps?

Post by nvx »

I tried to use a nice-looking font called Utopia since it also contains a reasonable support for math stuff (package mathdesign), but I was kind of shocked to see how small caps are typeset (see http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/utopia-md/utopia-md.pdf).

Are those real small caps? They look like fake ones to me -- compare for instance with Libertine (http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/libertine/libertine.pdf). :? I'd expect all TeX fonts to have small caps available, but it seems that would be a mistake. :(

Package pxfonts, for example, uses Palatino and there small caps look as expected (http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/palatino/palatino.pdf), however, I'd really like a bit "blacker" font. Bitstream Charter (packages charter & mathdesign) has math support as well, but small caps, unfortunately, look like fake ones.

Is there any font similar to Utopia with a solid math support there and real small caps as well? I wouldn't mind using Libertine one bit, but I was not able to find any package or a \usepackage parameter that would load adequate math symbols and fonts.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
nvx
