PDF Preview not working

Post by brachiaque »

Hello,

I'm using LyX 1.6.8 on Windows 7 Pro x64. Today I installed Adobe Reader X - and it doesn't work with LyX any more: Adobe Reader does not open the generated PDF after you created the PDF with LyX. It only shows a welcome dialog like "Open last files - Acrobat services - etc".

First idea of course was "file association" - But the pdf file association is alright. Double clicking a pdf works from any place (also paths with spaces).

Anyone having ideas? Confirmthis? Maybe related to some 64 bit thing?

TIA
Michael

Hy there, i had the same problem. After an hour of testing i have an solution. :)

Go to Tools->Settings->file formats
As format you chose PDF(pdflatex). At the point viewer there stands "pdfview". Delete this and type in "AcroRD32". Go than to save. And try to open your pdf.

It worked for me. I hope for you, too.

Kind regards

I worked to me too, thanks a lot!

Some correction to the instructions: In Lyx 1.6.8 go to tools/Preferences and then under "File Handling" click on "file formats" and then, as sniper_87 said,
as format you chose PDF(pdflatex), and at "viewer" delete "pdfview" and type in "AcroRD32". Save, and try to open your pdf.

Hey, remember that if you set up viewer to "AcroRD32" in Tools->preferences->file handling->file formats -> PDF(pdflatex). is a good idea to add the folder of AcroRD32.exe to tool->setting->Paths->Path prefix (tipicaly: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\)

Thank you sniper_87. It works for me too! I'm using Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit and Acrobat Reader X 10.1.3.

sniper_87 and all,

Thanks for workaround.

I have a slightly different but related problem: PDF preview with "pdfview" works but is very slow, while with "AcroRd32" the Update mode does not work.

With the default setting of Viewer to "pdfview" (under Tools -> Preferences -> File Handling -> File Formats -> PDF (pdflatex)) PDF preview works in both View [Ctrl+R] and Update [Ctrl+Shift+R] modes, however it is very slow: it takes ~15 seconds for the View action and ~30 seconds for the Update action. Most of this time seems to be spent by Acrobat Reader opening or refreshing the page.

When Viewer is set to AcroRd32, View is much faster, but Update does not work anymore: I get pdflatex error: "I can't write on file `notes.pdf`.". Perhaps using AcroRD32 is locking the file? I have to close Reader and run View again, kind of defeats the purpose of the Update action, which is very useful.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Thanks,
Aleksey

I don't use Windows but I've heard of weird things going on with Acrobat.

Using a different PDF reader would probably solve the problem. I have heard good things about Sumatra (it is also free and open source).

Please let us know if you find a solutions.

Hi guys,
I also had same problem with pdview.exe. I tried to fix with "Tools->Settings->file formats etc." option as sniper_87 said. But I didn't get good solution. I found weird way to solve this problem. I opened a template file from ex-working files and I copied-pasted my real document on template file. I pressed Ctrl+R and it's worked. :? :D
If you will use this method, you need to change your lyx file for everyview :))

Hello everyone.

I'm working on my thesis using Lyx and for a while now my PDF has stopped working. I've tried researching online for a solution but most of the snwers are in programing code that Latex uses and I cannot write or read code at all.

I tried the solution provided by sniper_87 but it does not work at all. When I try to view my pdf, at the bottom right of the window in Lyx I get the message that PDF preview was sucessful, but I get nothing.

I need some advice on what to do. Should I reinstal Adobe Acrobat? So I need to change any kind of path in the preferences window of Lyx?
