No, wait, you're telling me such a sofisticated language as LaTeX does not provide for case-based if-then alternatives. Hell, even QuickBasic does!

I only said that I am not aware of such a solution. And at the moment I have not the slightest idea of an approach. Do you have the same problem when using PDFLaTeX with babel?

Of course not, but I desperately need polyglossia because babel is not Unicode-compatible.

Again, aren't there if-based structures in LaTeX. Like if \fg is followed by colon/semicolon/int. mark/excl. mark, then add an unbreakable space after \fg. Too beautiful to be true? I hope not!

I think it would need to go down to low level LaTeX or even TeX itself. And my knowledge of TeX is still very limited.

So, you're suggesting I should ask for guidance in the LaTeX newsletter?

You could ask for help on comp.text.tex (ctt).

Just to take this up here again. Where exactly are the problems with babel and Unicode?

That polytonic greek is a mess with babel, so I'm stuck with polyglossia.

The proposed solution works fine for me (independent of the used font).
