Hi Corina,
welcome to the forum!
Also I started with MiKTeX and WinEdt, many years ago.
Today I use TeX Live with TeXworks as editor.

hi i'm cooking a PhD thesis
LaTeX can produce much better tables than excel does.
And it can generate much better data plots or graphics in general.
Plot samples: PGFplots.net
Graphics samples: TikZ examples
Further samples: LaTeX Cookbook
