I'm new to the LaTeX community but I used to be a printer back when God was a small child and Methuselah was in diapers.
I'm working on a couple of books and wanted more than OO/Libre Office offers (Holding nose when Word is mentioned) so a forum I'm on suggested LyX as a starting point to soften the blow of the learning curve.
Tips, suggested books to read, whatever, most welcome.
Best,
Allen

Hi Allen,
welcome to the forum!
LyX is easier to start, that's true. But non-standard things may be difficult with it anyway. It's easy as long as you walk the prepared path.
A couple of books, wow! For such big projects, I would take LaTeX, organize files well, fine-tune preamble, use macros, ...
Also, if you would decide to use LaTeX, we can help here in case of any questions.

Hi LaTeX folks...
Welcome,
personally i am not a LyX user. I stayed with LaTeX.
One book i can recommend is LaTeX for complete novices, another one is featured in the right column of this page with a current discount of 50 %

The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.
