General ⇒ Thesis template on TeXstudio - how to work

Hello,

I have limited experience working with LaTeX, created several documents in LyX and right now I would like switch to TeXstudio (on Mac) to complete my thesis.

I would like to use template this time, and I found the one that fits me the most http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/tex ... esisStyle/. However, I can not understand how to start to work with it. If I make any changes in preamble, nothing is working. I could not find information if I need to preinstall something or whatever. I am sure I miss something.

I hope there is some expert how can simply explain me what I am doing wrong. It would be a great help.

o not use this template, please, do not use this template.

Is is deprecated, there is a new version available.

Unless you are submitting to this university/school, do not use their template.

Why did you pick it, what do you have in mind?


Right now i am leading a hooly war against using templates of any kind in LaTeX caused it is based on a real big misunderstanding. Please invest some time in reading some introductory material (LaTeX for complete novices) and come back for more detailed questions. It will be less effort for the both of us, if you invest a day in reading what can be found in the link above.

Thank you suggesting for me to read a book. I have been using Lyx before and I know basic stuff. Maybe it is misunderstanding of the concept, but I would like to use something that was developed already.. this is what make us people to have any progress we have now.

Right now when I am on final stage of my thesis I would like to use that template because it fits requirements of my institution.

So it would be great if actually there is an answer to my question.

If I make any changes in preamble, nothing is working.

We need more details. What changes exactly? An nothing is working is not a good description. It could mean errors (which?) or that nothing changes. Provide specific code and error message or good descriptions.

can simply explain me what I am doing wrong.

Pretty impossible without details, currently, but for sure if there's more information.

Thank you for updated version.

I was taken coursera MOOC on Latex, and I first asked there that I cannot make any proper changes in files, they do not reflect in the preview, and that I see that https://coursera-forum-screenshots.s3.a ... .36.04.png

They told me that I have to "install the template", and that I should read the instruction.. I tried many times to find it.. but I could not.. maybe I am blind. (However, I could find instruction how to install the same template but for Lyx, but I want to work in TexStudio).

So my question, which actions I need to make that template starts working.. at least where it is written what steps I need to conduct to make it working..
