References and figure/table captions in-text

Post by templateuser »

hello

i love tufte’s work and think his books are beautifully designed. thank you for making this template available. i am starting work on a book and this looked ideal for what i have in mind. however, the way in which citations and figure captions are dealt with does not work well in my context. the tradition in the scientific literature is for citations to be given inline – [1,2] – as numbered in the bibliography and not as footnotes, or, rather, as sidenotes, where God intended footnotes to go! as for figures in the main text, their captions are sometimes so complicated (and full of citations), that they cannot be sidenotes either. is there a revised class that would accommodate this? if not, is it straightforward to make the changes to tufte-common.def ?

thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Jeremy

References and figure/table captions in-text

Post by Vel »

Hi Jeremy,

The style of this book relies heavily on the margin, to the point that it would almost not make sense to use it if you don’t want to put content into the margin. You could try editing the template to remove the margin (e.g. put everything in \begin{fullwidth}\end{fullwidth}) and change the referencing and footnotes to appear as they usually do in documents. Perhaps your book content would be more suited to the other book template on this website?

Cheers,

dear vel

many thanks for the feedback. the margin is, indeed, rather critical for tufte’s layout but it would be nice to have more control of what went into it. i think you are right that, for what i have in mind, it is easier to use a different template. pity!

best,

jeremy
