LyX ⇒ MBP Retinal
MBP Retinal
I noticed an older thread about no support for retinal MBPs. I was wondering if there was a anyway to take advantage of a retinal screen in v2.1.1.

You can follow LyX's support for retina displays here:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/8250
There might have been some minor improvements in 2.1.1, but my guess is that you will not see support at least until 2.2 and possibly not until we completely switch to Qt 5. I'm just throwing out guesses though.

Re: MBP Retinal
I am running Lyx 2.1.1+qt4-x86 64-cocoa on a shiny new macbook pro retina. The fonts are really blurry and after a few minutes pretty tough on the eyes. So I am just trying to confirm:
1) There currently is no workaround for this, correct? After looking around on the web I found nothing indicating a solution as the problem appears to be rather fundamental to the way Lyx renders fonts.
2) Is this something that will likely be fixed in 2.2 and roughly when would that be? It is hard to tell from the ticket info and comments how big a deal this issue is to the developers.
I wrote my whole dissertation in Lyx and really enjoyed the experience. However, this font thing is definitely a dealbreaker until it is sorted out. I just don't see how anyone could put up with the blurriness for an extended period of time.

Re: MBP Retinal
I have a 15" MBP and do not have Retina support in Lyx (I have had some stability problems with Lyx as is, so I stay away from patches & forks... I didn't even know they existed, to be honest). While I would love to Retina support in Lyx, I can tell you that IMHO it is usable in its current state. Yes, it looks pixelated when you first switch from another app with glorious Retina text, but I have found that I get used to it and it does not tire my eyes. Increasing the font size can help some. I certainly would not let it prevent me from getting a MBP.
Re: MBP Retinal
I found a very simple solution to the lyx problem with retina.
1. Download Retina Display Menu RDM):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/87351306/RDM.tar.gz
2. Whenever you want to work with lyx, go to RDM and set the resolution at 1920x1200 or, even better, at 2560x1600.
3. Zoon the font size of lyx at 400 or 500%
The fonts look quite smooth. This is not a permanent solution for everyone. But it works great for me.

Re: MBP Retinal
If anyone would like to test LyX 2.2.0, which will have support for Retina, please write an email to lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org so that we can let you know when we have installation files for development version of 2.2.0 for your platform. We plan to release 2.2.0 "soon", but do not have a date in mind, and note that currently the development status is "pre-alpha". I do however use 2.2.0 on a daily basis.
