Well, I can't get it to produce a cropped version with these options.

I'm so sick of trying to find a work around for this problem. But I've also decided XeTeX is necessary. I think I'll just comment out the autosegmental tree diagrams for the drafts, and only include them in the final version.

It's a shame; the externalize solution was so close to working.

XeLaTeX pst-asr: slow compile

I've found a solution, which is to not use pst-asr for autosegmental diagrams, but to use the xytree package instead.

There is a small example in the xytree documentation of how to do autosegmental diagrams, and you can extrapolate from this.

The xytree documentation also explains how to get the diagram into a numbered example; the \leavevmode option will work if you're using gb4e for examples.

If it get would get more complicated, TikZ and related packages such as tikz-qtree might help. At least with TikZ, anything in diagrams can be conveniently adjusted, which may compensate that there's no ready-made (but inflexible) syntax.
