MiKTeX and proTeXt ⇒ Class elsarticle in MiKTeX is not running

Hello,
I run MiKTeX 2.9 together with TeXnic-Center 1.0 on Windows. So far I worked with the document class article and everything was fine. Now I want to work with the document class elsarticle and installed it with the Package Manager (Admin). Additionally, I downloaded the folder elsarticle-template for an example from the page http://www.elsevier.com/author-schemas/ ... structions (Link: here).
When I load the file elsarticle-template.tex from the folder and compile it, no output (and no other files) are created and I get the message:

C:/ .../elsarticle-template.dvi: No such file or directory
C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\dvips.exe: DVI file can't be opened:

I am not very familiar with Latex and don't have any idea on the error code.
Does anybody know what is wrong?

my first suggestion would be to use the new version of TeXnic Center. RC1 is soo old

Can you make another run and show us the complete log file?

The message 'GUI framework cannot be initialized.' is well-known with TeXniccenter, certainly older versions, and means that MiKTeX is trying to install packages on-the-fly but can't. Try opening the MiKTeX options and turning off 'Ask for confirmation' (I forget the exact next): it should then be able to install everything you need. I'd also be tempted as suggested to update TeXniccenter.

Yes, as Joseph said, it's a known issue. It's listed in the MiKTeX 2.8 release notes (not in the 2.9 release notes).

TeXnicCenter compatibility

latex terminates with “GUI framework cannot be initialized” if started from TeXnicCenter (1.0 Stable Release Candidate 1). Please visit the MiKTeX 2.8 Issues page for a solution.

The link there to http://miktex.org/2.8/issues is dead, sadly.

Well, it could happen with other packages again. Perhaps upgrade to a full installation if 3 GB won't matter on your hard disk. Personally I would prefer a full TeX live.
