Sectioning in a two column LATEX document

Post by SuzuBell »

Hello. I am working on my two-column article. I notice that often when I use the \section{} command in LATEX, the new section appears in the next column, even if the first column before it is not full of text. This creates an awkward empty space at the bottom of the first column, just so that the second column can begin with the section title.

Is there any way to easily force that default to be overwritten? I did some research, but can't find much on two-column issues like this. Thank you!

Code: Select all

% !TeX program = pdfLaTeX
\documentclass[journal]{vgtc} % final (journal style)
\let\ifpdf\relax
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{mathptmx}
\usepackage{graphicx,xcolor}
\usepackage{sidecap}
\usepackage{times}
\usepackage{dblfloatfix}
\usepackage{fixltx2e}
\usepackage{mwe}
\usepackage{natbib}
\usepackage{fullpage}
\usepackage{color}
%\usepackage[dvipsnames,svgnames]
\usepackage[bookmarks,backref=true,linkcolor=black]{hyperref} %,colorlinks
\usepackage{listings} %% addedR

  pdftitle = {},
  pdfsubject = {},
  pdfkeywords = {},
  colorlinks=true,
  linkcolor= black,
  citecolor= black,
  pageanchor=true,
  urlcolor = black,
  plainpages = false,
  linktocpage
}
\usepackage{wrapfig,float}
\usepackage{caption} %%% added
\captionsetup[figure]{slc=off}  %%% added
\usepackage{subcaption}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{url}

Sectioning in a two column LATEX document

Post by Johannes_B »

Hi, this is a crosspost to TeX.SX.

Personally, i hate unmarked crossposts, if they are properly linked against each other, this is a completely different matter.

I'll have a look at this later, i saw you got some comments over at TeX.SX already.
The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.

Where can we download this journal style, i.e. class file? Do you have a link for us?

Btw. I suggest use a journal template only if you publish for that journal. That's because such templates are made for the special needs of the journal and may otherwise be outdated compared to last TeX versions and there may be incompatibilities.
