Music examples in LyX

Post by monamipierrot »

Hello all,
for my Thesis in history of opera I need to put some music examples: 90% are small chunks of music, such melodies, chords, rhythms (often along with lyrics), even 3 or 4 single notes (like a rhythm pattern example) with no staff, but, in the case of the smaller ones, I would like to have them in-line with plain text. What I would like, is something similar to what is available for Math equations, even if in a ERT-like box, which I can put where I want, edit, and manage as it were plain text.
I heard musixtex make something like it, but has not "musical" awareness, which could be a limitation when editing (few) bigger examples with 2 or more staves and 10+ measures.
I would like to have some opinion along with technical support for INSTALL and use package (I'm a Latex/LyX newbie)
Thanks all
H.

Music examples in LyX

I do not use LyX so I can't give any special advice. The first idea would be to use musixtex, but I don't know if or how it works with LyX. Perhaps you can use Lilypond and include the pieces from external files.

Best regards and welcome to the board

Thanks Thorsten, I would apply to MusixTex when will discard any other options.
Sorry for my skepticism, but, as for Lilypond, I'm puzzled: which is the purpose of implementing IMAGES (when talking about external files, it's conceptually the same of IMAGES, isn't it?) in my document when I could implement Finale or Sibelius chunks of music I can edit in relaxing WYSIWYG environment? - when it comes to images, it's all about GETTING, not MEANING ;-) - All this just for saving some bucks? (Of course I'm a Win user and I do have options) If I work with LaTeX I would love to have everything "coded", otherwise let's get back to old, stupid, beloved MSWord... Ok, this was a bit exagerated but what I would like was to know if there was a package with which use very small chunks of music in line with normal text AND big examples, something like:

"Beethoven hated long notes (such as *whole note* or *half note*) and loved short ones (*eight note*) as anyone can check in the whole first movement of the 5th symphony: [entire movement]"

Is there a way to have the in-line thing working with Lilypond?
The problem is that I am a newbie and I want to start with the most suitable system because I need a lot of time to get it working properly. Still couldn't see anything with Lilypond (tried a whole afternoon) and I know MusixTex would be worse. Please help me!
