Using a new document class/template with LyX
I read all the stickies and tried googling this elsewhere but I'm new to LaTeX and extremely confused about certain things. Basically I downloaded MikteX and I'm using the latest version of Lyx with it. Now all I basically know how to do is make pretty looking mathematics and add contents pages/titles/references/etc.
I'm looking to make a dissertation and my unviersity provides a template which can be found here:
http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/help/faqs/latex/thesisclass
so, what exactly do i need to do (and please be super specific as I am totally clueless to all the jargon I read).
Basically, I need to download ociamthesis.cls in the first line of that webpage. Does it matter where I save it? What exactly do I do next?
thanks very much!

Re: Using a new document class/template with LyX
If so, you want to put the .cls file in (Your Username)>Appdata>Roaming>MiKTeX>(Version Number)>tex>latex and then you need to go to the Start Menu and find MiKTeX in the programs list, open the Maintenence(Admin) folder, then click Settings(Admin). When that opens, click the Refresh FNDB button. Now you could use a template and work in TeXworks which probably came bundled with your MiKTeX installation.
To get it working with LyX, you need a layout file. Do you have one? Or does anyone in your department have one? If not, you could google lyx+layout+ociamthesis and see if it finds anything that looks like whatever you've been given. Once you have a layout file, you need to save it to (Your Username)>Appdata>Roaming> Lyx (Version Number)>layouts and then open LyX and select Reconfigure from the Tools menu. Wait for it to finish, then close LyX and open it again and open a new document. Hopefully then, your thesis class will be available and if you select it, will load correctly and compile a sample document (don't risk your actual thesis file at this point) without any errors.
