General ⇒ Registers in LaTeX

Seems that you can't really use registers directly in LaTeX without risk of disturbing something; you have to define variables which are assigned free slots. Is there a way around this? (Having numbered registers can be practical, e.g. for putting all footnotes into token registers.)
