I am using MikTeX 2.1 + WinEdt 5.x on WinXP for many years without problems.
But after I installed it on another machine running Win 7, MikTeX appears to work
partially: it compiles all LaTeX documents, produces ps and pdf outputs, generates
necessary pk fonts but does not preview documents by Yap. Yap reports an error:
"METAFONT: unknown ljfour mode". In fact, the lists of screen and printed modes
in Yap are seen to be empty though all necessary files seem to be present:
\texmf\metafont\misc\modes.mf
\texmf\miktex\config\mfmodes
etc.
It also appears that the line command
initexmf --list-modes
does not see metafont modes as well.
What could be the reason of this problem within Windows 7 ?
What feature is different in Windows 7 from that of XP ?

This question is for sure misplaced here and belongs to a Wind0ws forum.yumashev wrote:[…] What feature is different in Windows 7 from that of XP ?
