tikz and texmaker problem

Post by anirban1978 »

Hi I'm completely new to latex and honestly learning the ropes here. I recently saw a video on youtube as to how to insert a flow-chart in the latex document using tikz package and went on doing that. But errors are keep coming and I'm clueless to do what. This is the log file I found to be generated after compiling the source code. Please help me, and I'm really sorry for not knowing the intricacies of this program.

Code: Select all

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit) (preloaded format=pdflatex 2013.5.22)  8 JUN 2013 22:48

The paragraph just ended includes some glue that has
infinite shrinkability, e.g., `\hskip 0pt minus 1fil'.
Such glue doesn't belong there---it allows a paragraph
of any length to fit on one line. But it's safe to proceed,
since the offensive shrinkability has been made finite.

tikz and texmaker problem

Post by cgnieder »

Hi and welcome to the LaTeX community!

I can't be specific but usually the first error message in the log gives a good hint to where the problem lies. In you case it is

Code: Select all

! Undefined control sequence.
\endtikzpicture ...icturepositiononpage \endscope
                                                  \let \pgf@baseline =\pgf@s...
l.12 \end{tikzpicture}

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.
This says the error is an undefined control sequence, \endscope in this case, and occurs in line 12 of your file. Since you haven't posted the code that caused the error I cannot be more specific.

tikz and texmaker problem

Clemens mentioned that you did not post any code, since you are new to LaTeX you really should read about Minimal working examples. Those examples help to isolate the error.

EDIT: typos corrected

tikz and texmaker problem

Post by Johannes_B »

Code: Select all

\listfiles
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{shapes,shadows,arrows}
\begin{document}

\tikzstyle{decision}=[diamond,draw]
\tikzstyle{line}=[draw]
\tikzstyle{elli}=[draw,ellipse]
\tikzstyle{block}=[draw,rectangle,text centered]
\begin{tikzpicture}
  \node (start) at (0,0) {START} {};
  \node (end) at (2,3) {finish} {};
\path (start) edge  (end);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

Hi, your code works for me. I put a bit more into it, so one can see some more. Try this code on your system, the listfiles-command shows the versionnumbers and dates of the packages your system is using (in the log file). Please copy this list and show it to us.
An update might help too.

PS: Please post your minimal examples as code, so we can just click on Open in WriteLaTeX.

And complete files as attachments can be downloaded and processed on a local machine. So this should be no big deal. In fact not every code example works on WriteLaTeX because they have not all packages installed. Nevertheless I agree that documents with <30 lines can be posted directly as code here.

tikz and texmaker problem

Post by anirban1978 »

@Johannes_B: Thank you,thank you,thank you I just cannot tell you how happy I am to see the code working. I've recently migrated from MS WORD to the wonderful world of Latex and it is quite amazing to see how beautiful the document looks in .pdf format. To be honest my phd guide actually insisted me to use Latex. But the pleasure is all mine. The problem I think is not in the code but with the tikz package. After reading your suggestion I updated miktex 2.9 through mpm and voila! the code starts to work flawlessly. So once again A BIG THANKS TO YOU;you are a life saver.
