Texmaker and TeXstudio ⇒ Strange characters

I use Texmaker (3.5.2) at work all day long, both on Windows and Mac computers.

I have a strange thing happening. After using it for a few hours, I get incorrect characters appearing. For example, an accented capital E begins appearing whenever I enter the \ key.

It is a relatively minor nuisance. I exit Texmaker and reload it, and when I reload the .tex file I was workng on, the problem seems to go away for a while, then reappears.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this strange behavour and knows what causes it?

I switched to TeXstudio and the same thing happens. The "\" key is the one that usually starts misbehaving first.

Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Does the \ key work in other programs? I noticed a similar issue, when using screen in a putty terminal window, the key bindings for characters which I get with the AltGr key are gone (\, {, }, [, ], ...). It still worked with Alt+Ctrl keys on my (German) keyboard then.

I did a thorough check and found that the \ key worked properly in other programs. The problem still persists only when using Textmaker or Texstudio.
