General ⇒ Umlaute in TeXnicCenter (MiKTeX 2.8)

Hi!
Im using the TeXnicCenter and I can't get it to produce german umlaute correctly. It produces an error:

"! package inputenc Error: keyboard character used is undefinend".

I've tried several things like \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}.
But this e.g. produces hundreds of errors and the document doesn't compile...

help would be very appreciated

I guess you are using version 1. If you created the files with texcenter you have tochange the option from utf8 to latin1.
