Case Differentiation with two Rows and one Column

Post by Gnosos »

Hi,

I'm relatively new to LyX and am spending more time than I should trying to do something that should be very simple. In my formula I want to have a curly bracket followed by two items stacked vertically. The cases environment seems to offer this capability, but I've been unable to get it to work the way I want.

When I insert a cases environment initially, it has one row and two items (i.e., 1x2). I can add a second row, but then the display is 2 x 2. I tried deleting a column, but the menu items are grayed out. If I manually delete with the delete key, the entire cases element is deleted.

I've also tried various key combinations (on a Mac), by putting the cursor in the cases item and trying various permutations of the command, options, control, and shift keys, separately and in combination. I also read the Detailed Math Manual, but it was no help. It seems the cases environment wants a minimum of two columns. If so, then what else should I be using?

So what's the secret?

I did some more snooping and now see that LyX is inserting a "&" between the two elements in the cases environment. I need to change this to a LaTeX newline, "\\". But I don't know how. How does one do this in LyX?
